Established in 1978 and officially recognized by the Registrar of Trade Unions.

Nigeria Union of Pensioners is a product of the aftermath of the restructuring exercise carried out in 1977 by the Federal Military Government on all the nearly 1000 trade unions in Nigeria. Although most of them are mushroom.
As a result of the above, there were serious efforts by the Pensioners to come together and form a united front as an official voice of all Pensioners to fight for their right, this led to the emergence of various Pensioners Associations. These associations later metamorphosed into what is known today as the NIGERIA UNION OF PENSIONERS.
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners was registered as a full fledged Trade Union in 1978 with its first registration number as initially approved by the Registrar of Trade Unions (RTU) as N0 0067. After the final registration/restructuring, it became No. 0024. The Union has members in the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Today, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners is the apex and umbrella body of all the Pensioners in the country. It is the only Union approved by the Federal Government through the office of the Registrar of Trade Unions (RTU), to cater for the welfare of Nigerian Civil Pensioners.
In every state capital, there is a State Council office that can be contacted for membership details. The State councils have the mandate to organize Pensioners from all offices with pension benefits including Federal and States Institutions, Public Service, Parastatals, Private Sector and Local Governments.
The ULTIMATE GOAL of Nigeria Union of Pensioners is to ensure that indeed, “REST IS SWEET AFTER LABOUR”
